if you're getting a home built please employ a reputable builder not the cheapest builder and do your research. building and construction lawyer. spend the money, have them go over the contract, make changes, keep people accountable, and bring the heat if shit goes wrong. independent building inspectors. get these guys in early and continuously. a decent lawyer will have these guys on call. all of this is worth more than the headache of not getting these guys involved. i've seen what happens when you simply trust the builder. i've also seen what happens when you have your arse in good hands. builders are slime, assurances, handshakes, and smiles. they will give whatever excuse and lie until they are legally in the clear, then it's your problem. they will shut down their company to avoid legal action only to open a new business the next day.

I don’t understand why the roof plumber/builder doesn’t know his own building regulations when putting these box gutters/capping and sumps together in the first place? Even if the measurements aren’t on the plans wouldn’t he have some sort of idea of minimum measurements to meet some sort of compliance? Why even bother ? Where’s the savings in cutting corners like this?

@siteinspections at 38:00 the AS 4254 is discussed but AS 5601 is shown on screen in relation to a walkway and lighting to service the AC unit. I was telling my builder about this, and he asked for the details but when I look up AS 5601.1:2013 6.3.11 (FYI its been replaced with a 2021 version) its about gas appliances ("use of fuel gases" so AC gas is not included) and not AC units. Is there another AS they says a light and/or walkway is required for AC unit inspection or has it been agreed somewhere that AS 5601 would also cover the AC unit ? Thanks

I've been telling people for years that the quality work in the US is because of the integrity of individual men and the pride they have in themselves. Our city inspection process is a joke. I find subpar work, passing "inspection", on a regular basis. Demographics matter.

It’s rather hilarious to watch all these screwups. In my country we would have issues with crap like that on industrial buildings like warehouses. Even build to standards would be considered low grade over here.

This kind of thing makes me never want to visit Australia. Help me.. a dumb American understand the building process in Australia. Is the homeowner allowed to send out his own inspector during every phase of construction or is that against the law? What about the city’s inspector’s, do they come out during every phase of construction and verify or certify whether the building is being built properly? Also, what happens to those inspectors that continually write things off as good and are later found to be, not up to code. Do they lose their jobs? What about the tradesmen who work on the projects, do they get find for substandard work? Do you guys have a Better Business Bureau, or some type of public entity that lists these bad builders and bad tradesmen so that they cannot find work anymore? Do these tradesmen have to be certified and is there a school that they have to go to in order to get a license to work?

Those blokes are just lying their ass off. On a project like this there’s not just one engineer, it’s an entire team everyone designed a different part and a head engineer supervising. That’s one of the issues with large builds like this. One bloke designs the stairs, another one draws the waterproofing. The issues with marrying them together are left to the actual builders. I’ve had to tell the site managers countless times that the drawings wouldn’t work. A huge problem is that most builders just don’t have a clue about what they’re doing. But what else could you expect if you always go for the cheapest labour? That’s not the fault of the construction workers most of the time, they are often enough pressured to do the job with substandard materials as fast as possible and if they don’t have any decent training crap like this is the result.

I'm not sure about Australia, but as an American civil engineer even if we put notes about field adjustments or something of the like, we still need to show minimum specifications on our plans. I can't put a water main going straight through a gravity sewer line and then leave a note saying the contractor has to figure it out, that's literally the engineer's job.
